Leadership is a complex dance of skills, attitudes, and behaviors that inspire others to follow you—not because they have to, but because they want to. Over time, I’ve come to appreciate that certain essential leadership traits make all the difference, especially in high-stakes environments like global telecommunications, where secure and highly available IT systems are non-negotiable.

What I discovered though was this this phase of my career became the most fulfilling of my career. Politically, I could be as outspoken as I desired. but the most fulfilling part of this phase of my journey was the ability to play forward some of my experience and wisdom to more junior employees who were in the initial stages of their careers. There were all sorts of opportunities to play it forward.

The accident broke the pattern. I ended up being a blessed man with only two broken arms. The life lesson was that I learned --- the hard way ---- was how to accept help. It entailed both help for me to take care of myself and help to prepare food for me while I recovered. The other lesson that became apparent to me was that I had built a crackerjack team. They were highly skilled and competent. They knew I was down for a while and that they needed to step up and do their j

I always accept a vendor's pitch. I want to understand their product and its current capabilities. Where do they believe the market is going? What is on their current roadmap? Would they customize features for us if we need something not on their current roadmap or would they include it as a later future roadmap deliverable? What is their cost structure? The answers to those questions help me to validate what we are doing and the direction that we are taking
