It took a brother’s terminal illness to bring about the reconciliation of the relationship. There were way too many lost years of relationship and fellowship over a few dollars ---- which amounted to nothing in the long run.

In these days of polarization, we no longer actually listen to each other. We focus on counter points or rebuttals in many of our interactions. We could affect meaningful changes in our ecosystems if we tried to empathetically listen and understand each other. We often understand problems differently. We have different perspectives.

This is a delightful story of living in the present, taking the time to interact with others --- even those who we seldom interact, and remembering people and places. People like to be remembered and recognized. As leaders, we lead organizations of People. A leader is someone who inspires others and has the ability to motivate others to action. A person-centered leader inspires loyalty and respect.

From a poem by Linda Ellis entitled “The Dash” “I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstone from the beginning to the end. He noted that first came the date of the birth and spoke the following date with tears. But he said what mattered most of all was the dash between the years." How we invest those dash years depends on our priorities and how we choose to impact the lives of the people and world around us.

Actions do speak louder than words. People are always watching. How we respond to a situation reflects our character --- including our integrity. How we treat other people or how we are willing to do the right thing or speak up when needed reflects our integrity too.
